Description
Polina Barskaya’s (b. 1984, Cherkasy, Ukraine) paintings hone in on the psychological intensity of their subjects and tell stories about the human condition. With her dedication to portraiture and capturing the intrinsic nature of their subjects, Alice Neel’s work comes to mind, swirled into a raw version of Botticelli’s renaissance figures.
Working from photographs, while allowing for artistic liberties, Barskaya employs windows and light to create a sense of disconnect and isolation within her scenes. Familial love is communicated through physical closeness and psychological distance.
