Pallavi Singh’s work challenges conventional notions of sexuality, gender stereotypes and beauty. In her new series, she takes on historical artistic representations of bathing, where traditionally the female form is viewed from the perspective of the male gaze. In a deliberate effort to subvert male dominance, she consciously shifts the focus to portraying male bodies. Her works capture moments before and after bathing, and the ritual itself. Inspired by Indian miniatures and contemporary art, they provoke viewers to reflect on their preconceived assumptions of gender and beauty. The paintings also address notions of metrosexuality and in that sense further the struggle for women’s rights in India.
