Rosalie Smith’s wonderfully inscrutable assembly of gourds, root systems, found bits of architecture, and industrial elements is at once futuristic and agrarian. While the work’s title, “Mobile Communication Center,” claims the sculpture as a communication tool, the work resists clear legibility. Owing something to the improvised architectures and infrastructures of New Orleans, where Smith grew up, Smith cites science fiction narratives of her own invention as the “invisible architecture” that guides her work.
