Detroit-based artist Lauren Kalman’s performance work To Have or to Hold… meditates on whether we can ever truly assemble or connect with others. Kalman produces wheel thrown and blown vessels that she wraps in an embrace before firing. In the finished work, the contours of the vessel are distorted with the imprint or trace of her own body. Conceived during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, the works represent the threat of losing of social connection in state of emergency.
