Kat Ryals’s sumptuous velvet carpets critique global capitalism, and the culture of consumerism and conspicuous consumption that keep us all in its thrall. To create In This World You’re a God, Ryals composited recycled fabrics, craft materials, and found objects to create textile works, which she photographs and then prints on velvet. The finished works have what the artist calls “casino carpet aesthetics,” portraying capitalism as a game that the house always wins.
