X-TRA at 25 Years: Art, Criticism, and the View From L.A.
X-TRA at 25 Years: Art, Criticism, and the View From L.A.
Ice Palace Studios
1400 North Miami Avenue
Join curator and critic Nora N. Khan for a talk on artist-run contemporary art journal X-TRA, on the cusp of its 25th anniversary. Khan and invited guests will take a broad view of X-TRA’s publishing, drawing on selections from the journal’s vast archive of artist’s writing. As X-TRA’s published writers mined distinct eras of contemporary art, through regional lenses of speculative and science fiction, feminist performance, and labor politics, what can we learn from ‘the view from L.A.’? What can publishers of independent criticism learn from the methods, prose, and style of artist’s writing as a form, as theory-crafting, as a project of rewriting art history? How does the category of artist’s writing propose criticism as a form of ekphrasis and witness? This talk is for anyone interested in creating sustainable models that support experimental writing within evolving arts ecosystems.
