Description
Scott Young’s Planned Obsolescence is a nod to the cultural impact of commercial shopping centers. Mixing romantic and fetishistic still lives with imagery from the 1980s soap opera Dynasty, Young captures an aspirational essence fueled by 20th century commodification. A symbol of style and elegance, Dynasty influenced suburban Americans to pursue its allure at malls, and for Young, the shopping center, postwar domesticity, our current age of E-commerce and social media all share a similar matrix of infinity. The mall becomes, like Dynasty, a vessel for illusions.
