The paintings where Benjamin’s bright colors emerge from a deep black matte base are inspired by the black scratch-away paper she drew on as a child, where rainbow line work is revealed. Her palette on black is reminiscent of the retro neon signage found in a dusty desert town at night. The woman in this painting reclines on the cracked earth of the desert. She stomps on a mirror with her heeled cowgirl boots, shattering it. She gropes herself while butterflies land on her, one posing on her fingertip, another landing on her vagina as if to cover her or to pollinate from her body.
