Image of artwork titled "Don’t Look at Me" by Heather Benjamin

Heather Benjamin, Don’t Look at Me, 2022
Acrylic, flashe, gouache on canvas
54 × 48 × 1 inches

The woman has lost a shoe in her state of frenzy. She moves to cover her naked body. The mirror she’s just shattered lies on the ground. Her hat reads “Demon,” but she’s taken it off, suggesting a self exorcism. The paintings where Benjamin’s bright colors emerge from a deep black matte base are inspired by the black scratch-away paper she drew on as a child, where rainbow line work is revealed. Her palette on black is reminiscent of the retro neon signage found in a dusty desert town at night.
