Following John Baldessari’s recommendation set out in the conceptual painting ‘Tips for Artists Who Want to Sell’ (1966), to depict light colours, landscapes, nudes, bulls and animals, the deceptive clarity inherent to the technique by which they are executed (a trope of surrealism, which alongside the Magritte styled pipe smoked by a giraffe and upside down monkey, illustrating another subject on Baldessari’s list) akin to the functioning of advertisements, hides the logic to endorse the series as commodity in plain view.
