Afro-German artist Vincent Haynes creates haunting paintings based on screenshots of government YouTube channels, depicting governmental assemblies and patriotic pageantry meant to confer and confirm the power of the state. In “Staatsakt,” which translates to state occasion or ceremony, rows of men carry the draped coffin of an unknown head of state. Haynes draws our attention to our participation in this spectacle: whether this represents the fall of an autocrat or the continuation of dictatorship rests with us.
