Ruby Chen, Encountering Sorrow, 2024
Steel, graphite paint on concrete, ink on rice paper, speaker and sound (2:33 mins.)
23.5 × 16 × 16 inches

Ruby Chen’s sculpture and sound installation Encountering Sorrow questions how we make space for real human connection in a society obsessed with machines. Assembled from steel and concrete, this non-functional machine delves into what the artist calls “the internal clash between the human primal instincts and the pursuit of technological advancements.” The work reflects on the sorrow that comes from devices that promise but never truly deliver connectivity or community.
