In her series mother-land, Taiwanese-born, New York City based artist Wu Chia Yun finds a precarious sense of freedom in Taiwan’s alienation and statelessness. Her work positions the island as part of a new sort of map, in which Taiwan’s fluidity and fugitivity allow it to flow between many different contexts and levels of reality. In this photograph, the artist drops an aqueous screen in front of a landscape scene, so that water merges with land to form an assembly of stars.
