Peeking out the gated window to Arthur Somers Park, I happily missed the friction burns of the jungle gym and skinned knees across playground asphalt. Friday afternoon, on my step-stool beside Auntie Del, I watched the way coconut oil pooled to the top of the rice pot just before coming to boil, and how sazon-tinged grease casted kaleidoscopic scarlet speckling in brown-stew. Whorling and bobbing under the turbulence of woodgrain utensils, fatty jewels glimmered in advance of the coming meal.
