In Enduring the surface of water, Mikame added a three- dimensional perspective to the painting with the motif of puddles and the sky.
Mikame says: when I saw how water poured into a glass at night caught the sunlight the next morning, I had an idea. The idea was that com- monplace landscapes and scenes seen in everyday life could become universal images that are not simply tied to personal experiences and feelings.
Sights such as a glass catching light, sunlight filtering through the trees, and puddles are everyday scenes, yet they transcend the timing of their experience and boundaries between self and other, and persist across the past and future. When a certain scene is linked to an individual’s perception, an image that can be shared is created, regardless of the details.
