Me iā ia translates to with them. The fiber surface was handmade by the artist pictured here at the center of the composition in the process of kapa making from the bark of the wauke tree. The cultural ideas associated with growing and harvesting the tree to make a cloth brings a school of traditions into the picture, and the communities who embody this art. The movements kanaka (Native Hawaiians) make and the behaviors in relationship with ’āina continue to evolve this kapa craft; making these women and non-binary people of today, revolutionary of craft and cultural art. The collection of these images and transfers onto the kapa are practical translations of visual language coming directly from the story of kapa making and its context to contemporary art.
