Nora Shields’ hybrid form of sculpture and painting draws from the languages of minimalism, Supports/Surfaces, and Pattern and Decoration, investigating the intersections between art and design while resisting easy categorization. Shields primarily works with metal––with a special focus on paper-thin 22 gauge aluminum––which she bends, hand sprays, and hand-cuts, producing dramatic forms of large-scale works of abstracted bas relief.
