Robert Sandler, “Domestic Clown 4,” 2020, inkjet on archival print, 24 x 19 inches

Description

Robert Sandler’s practice frequently deconstructs meaning by frustrating the viewer’s desire. He playfully explores our collective fantasies in images that reference popular culture and parody domestic life. Spanning across multiple media and a range of styles, Sandler’s work charts the political possibilities of excess and failure.

The artist’s trademark clowns are trying their best—as one watches them navigate a number of different obstacles one may begin to appreciate their whimsically crafted failures. Sandler’s avatars imply that if we are not all clowns, then maybe we ought to be.
