Martine Syms’ multimedia works offer a critical exploration of the performance, circulation and consumption of blackness and contemporary identity politics in visual culture. Baphomet, named after the English deity, features Syms signature color choice of purple, and employs her practice of appropriating imagery from popular culture and the internet, in this case replicating a faceless devil emoji.

Syms (b. 1988, Los Angeles, CA) is a Los Angeles-based artist. Syms has exhibited widely, including presentations at the Museum of Modern Art, Hammer Museum, ICA London, New Museum, Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles, the Graham Foundation, and The Studio Museum in Harlem, among many other acclaimed institutions. More recently, she had her second solo exhibition at Bridget Donahue and participated in the 2019 Whitney Biennial.
