Estefania Puerta (b. 1988 in Colombia) reflects in compositions of dense and varied materials through her research of hysteria and personal history of immigration in the United States. This inquiry has led to questions around what we identify as foreign or familiar; comforting or threatening. Puerta incorporates organic materials to form new poetics of transformation and translation. Blurring the humanoid body with the environment, re-contextualizing mythologies, pulling apart the subversive nature of the decorative, and beautifying the grotesque are themes that often reappear. In her recent work Receivers Puerta questions human acts embodied by mythic forms – and their healing transmission.
