Yasue Maetake’s recent bas-relief series masterfully blends the dichotomy of nature’s ephemeral beauty and the enduring spirit of life, taking inspiration from the unique ecosystem of Governors Island.
Here, decay and rejuvenation exist side by side, reflecting the intertwined cycles of life and death. In this presentation of six artworks, Maetake taps into the rich texture and depth of washi, a traditional Japanese paper, marrying it with unexpected elements like steel rust and plant tannins. Venturing beyond the confines of traditional artistry, she challenges the limitations of conventional framing, propelling her artworks into a sculptural realm.
Rooted deeply in her Japanese heritage, Maetake’s pieces resonate with an animistic spirit, viewing each object and material as imbued with life. This contemporary dance of tradition, innovation, and nature presents an evocative snapshot of the fragile equilibrium between creation and disintegration.
