“Quality Control” is an ongoing project composed of hollow ceramic bricks, cast from naturally occurring clay that Peter Hoffmeister collects from the locations of former brickworks. Using the bricks, he creates temporary site-specific structures, held together with mason line. For NADA House, Hoffmeister created a porous membrane through which light and air can pass, unlike the façade of House 403. In this way he considers the ubiquity of brick in NYC architecture and its physical relationship to the land—as many bricks in the city were made using Hudson River clay—and questions how the brick functions culturally as an indication of an authentic past.
