Multimedia artist Hector Dionicio Mendoza combines the materials of earth and industry to create his sculptures, which unite principes of curanderismo (shamanism) with the stuff of industry such as corrugated cardboard and cinderblocks. Born in Urupan, Michoacan, Mexico, and currently based in the agricultural community of the Salinas Valley in California, Dionicio Mendoza speaks to the complexity of migration while also showing how people can, as the artist says, “remain rooted in reverence of ancestors and spirits in nature.”
