Nazanin Noroozi, This Bitter Earth, Tehran 200110 #2, 2023
Screen print on Sekishu paper and abaca on hand-pulled cotton sheet. Triptych
24 × 54 inches

Nazanin Noroozi works with images of mediated trauma as if they were science fiction in order to come to terms with them and oddly re-integrate them into the realm of possible futures. Their specificity and senselessness are no longer coded as “bad news elsewhere” but rather ongoing tragedies that need to be cleaned up.

"This Bitter Earth" is an image series that Nazanin manipulated and revisited in multiple: the 2020 downing of Ukraine International Airlines Flight 752 by the Iranian government; the devastating explosion at the Port of Beirut, Lebanon in 2020; the last U.S. airplane leaving Afghanistan in 2021 after the military’s withdrawal; and home footage of a childhood birthday party in Iran. Her work addresses notions of displacement, tragedy, and instability, drawing from public and personal image collections.
