Chicago Invitational 2019

Artist Kahlil Robert Irving and Daniel Berger, collector and Director of Iceberg Projects in Chicago, discuss Irving’s work in sculpture, printmaking and other media, illustrating his conceptual foundations and the personal threads woven throughout. Drawing from current events, art history, and media studies, this conversation will serve to interrogate Irving’s contemporary practice and experience as an African American artist in the current political climate.

Kahlil Robert Irving (b. 1992, San Diego, CA) is an artist currently living and working in St. Louis, Missouri. He attended the Sam Fox School of Design and Visual Art, Washington University, St. Louis (MFA, 2017); and the Kansas City Art Institute (BFA, Art History and Ceramics, 2015). In 2017, Callicoon Fine Arts mounted his first solo exhibition in New York titled Streets:Chains:Cocktails. Since then, his work has been exhibited at the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, Kansas; the Craft and Folk Art Museum, Los Angeles; and the RISD Museum, Rhode Island, among others.

Dr. Daniel Berger is a leading HIV specialist in the U.S. He is Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Illinois and medical director and founder of Northstar Medical Center, the largest private HIV-treatment and research center in Greater Chicago. Dr. Berger is known for his activity in HIV research, his publications include the Lancet and the New England Journal of Medicine. He is also an active patron of the arts. In 2010 he founded Iceberg Projects, a Chicago alternative exhibition space. His art-related publications include Militant Eroticism: The Art+Positive Archives (Sternbeg Press, Berlin) and David Wojnarowicz: Flesh of My Flesh (SPD, Berkley Ca). He is a member of the Board of Governors for the Art Institute of Chicago and co-President of the Board of Trustees of the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art, NY.
