The New Art Dealers Alliance (NADA) and Pérez Art Museum Miami PAMM) are pleased to announce the selection of the sixth annual NADA Acquisition Gift for PAMM, an acquisition gift which provides funding for PAMM curators to acquire an artwork for the museum’s permanent collection.

For this year’s edition, PAMM Associate Curator Jennifer Inacio and Assistant Curator Maritza Lacayo have selected Camila Falquez’s Samantha Siagama, Trans-Indigenous Leader from Hannah Traore Gallery.

“This photograph is part of an ongoing series in which Falquez works closely with Colombian trans communities to portray strong and powerful identities,” said PAMM Associate Curator Jennifer Inacio and Assistant Curator Maritza Lacayo. “We are excited to bring her work into the collection as it speaks not only to our commitment to Latin American art, but also expands on the conversation of diversity and inclusion.”

New York-based photographer Camila Falquez’s solo presentation for Hannah Traore Gallery at NADA Miami was one of eight chosen galleries to be featured in Curated Spotlight, a special section sponsored by TD Bank and curated by Jenée-Daria Strand.

The work chosen for PAMM’s permanent collection showcases Samantha, a community leader and activist from the coffee region of Colombia who works as a coffee picker on a farm. She leads and coordinates a group of fellow Trans women, who are exiled from the Emberá Indigenous tribe for defending their gender identity. The voluminous skirt in the photo was created by the artist herself along with stylist Lorena Maza using the farm's window curtains. With this, the artist aims to challenge notions of survival and resistance while highlighting the beauty and dignity of the model, preserving the essence of her everyday life.

“Given my lifelong commitment to empowering individuals through narratives centered on community, humanity, and liberation, the acquisition of this particular piece enables my subjects, like  'Samantha', to assert her presence and challenge established norms in environments that had previously denied them access. I hope to keep opening the door to the "Gods That Walk Among Us," said Camila Falquez.

The NADA Acquisition Gift for PAMM provides funding for PAMM curators to acquire an artwork for the museum’s permanent collection, which features international modern and contemporary art from the U.S. Latino experience, the African diaspora, Latin America, and the Caribbean.

“We’re thrilled to celebrate the sixth year of our partnership with Pérez Art Museum Miami for our annual acquisition gift,” said NADA Executive Director Heather Hubbs. “PAMM is an integral hub in Miami’s diverse art scene, and we are continually gratified to see the work of our galleries and their artist’s integrated into PAMM’s collections with this collaboration. It’s very exciting that Camila’s work was selected from Hannah Traore Gallery from our Curated Spotlight section.”

Now in its sixth iteration, the NADA Acquisition Gift for PAMM was designed to enhance the relationship between the museum and the fair’s diverse roster of exhibiting galleries and artists, and provides an opportunity for NADA to support and engage with the art institutions of Miami-Dade County in exciting and dynamic ways. The NADA Acquisition Gift for PAMM is funded by ticket sales of NADA Miami 2023.
