Juan Capistrán, Violent Hierarchy (Spea Smill), 2019
Blood sweat and tears on canvas
144 × 72 × 2 inches

A series of works that question and explore social power structures and modalities of resistance. The works composed of blood, sweat, tears and lard draw references to the writings of Huey P. Newton and the art works of Emory Douglas, both of the Black Panther party, and draw parallels to the themes of the novel Lord of the Flies and the graffiti slogans of May 68 as a way of shifting and repositioning political ideology and struggle.
